Navigation Boxes

Hey guys, over on Wikipedia, I've created a few Author Navigation Boxes, one for Mark Z. Danielewski and one for Stephen King (the King one took hours, you can view it here) and one for Edgar Allan Poe. Basically what this does is create a cool little navigation box at the bottom of every entry related specifically to a certain person.

I'd like to start using these on ZineWiki for some of our more prolific writers. I've created a mock one using myself (with a few fake titles thrown in for demonstration purposes). Can you take a look on my page and let me know what you think about using these? Alan Fall of Autumn 15:17, 18 September 2006 (EDT)

Categories vs Lists

I spent the morning going through the Zines A-Z lists and comparing each listing to the zines catagory tag and making sure that every zine we had in the wiki was on the hand-made lists, and vice versa. As the wiki grows, I doubt I'll be able to do this again by hand. So we need to keep up on that a little better. Each time any of you see a new zine added, please make sure it is also added to the hand-made Zines A-Z list.

Eventually I would like to move it all over to Categories, like the Zinester Directory to avoid the double work. But until more of those red links are blue, we need to keep the hand-made Zines A-Z list. Thanks for all your help. Alan Fall of Autumn 11:22, 30 September 2006 (EDT)

"Wikipedia" or "I practice my melodrama"

We're up for deletion again (right here)... this will be the third time. The first two times we sucessfully beat the nomination and have kept our page. This time around I'm too tired to once again make the case that zines are legitimate and that within the "zine scene" this is currently the largest and most complete database. I'm tired of having to defend how I spend every waking moment of my life that's not reserved for eating or watching The Simpsons. If we've somehow fooled ourselves and the thousands like us, I'd rather live the lie, that what we're doing actually means something. So if you want to make a case, awesome, if not, they can feel free to erase us this time. Alan Fall of Autumn 07:28, 21 March 2007 (EDT)

  • I added my vote. I also put up notices about the deletion on the talk pages of the articles on Punk Planet, Girl Germs, Absolutely Zippo, J.D.s, Kill Your Pet Puppy and Famorama, all of which included a link to this site, so that readers interested in zines can just come here rather than searching on Wikipedia for something they won't find : ) I hate Wikipedia.InvisibleFriend 17:45, 21 March 2007 (EDT)
  • Thanks InvisibleFriend, I put a keep vote on there too, as did someone else right after mine. I was having a particularly bad day yesterday after trying to defend zines to someone else, so this was like the last straw kind of stuff. I'm balanced once again though. =) Alan Fall of Autumn 08:10, 22 March 2007 (EDT)
    • That's what I'm for, when someone attacks zines and self-publishing or a project I'm involved with, I go to battle to defend it. I pretty much took away that guy's argument, and everyone else has said "keep," so it should be interesting how he responds. dan10things 14:32, 22 March 2007 (EDT)
    • Err, you do know that Wiki-admin JzG has reported on this wiki back over on Wikipedia?? May be you should just move some pages "on wheels" if you feel like doing so. Heh, was so fun to do a bit of pagemoves... but it ain't no more. --Willy on Wheels 19:26, 22 March 2007 (EDT)
  • I saw that, although he incorrectly labeled this Wiki discussion as spam. I think it's perfectly fine to discuss the deletion in this forum to let people know of it's nomination and what editors here think of it. If he wants to tattle about to his list-admin buddies he's more than welcome to, although some would call his actions immature. I did however delete his mischaracterization of this discussion as spam. dan10things 12:08, 23 March 2007 (EDT)

Woot! I just noticed it reached no consensus, the article passed the test again. I do think everyone that edit's ZineWiki should work on their friends at larger print publications and their local alt-weeklies. A feature article or two on ZineWiki in a magazine or paper would go a long ways towards preventing the article being nominated for deletion again. dan10things 21:26, 28 March 2007 (EDT)

  • I saw that. Small victory dance, until three months from now when they try again. =) Alan Fall of Autumn 23:21, 28 March 2007 (EDT)
  • Congratulations! (with fingers crossed...) InvisibleFriend 13:00, 29 March 2007 (EDT)

Please Delete My Page

I hope this doesn't become a trend. I can understand it, sort of, from the zinester's perspective. But if we truely are trying to document the history of zines, we can't randomly take a stolen sharpie to black out the names and titles who don't wish, for whatever reason, to be listed here. We can take out "legal names" if they wrote under a pen name, no problem. We can leave out personal information that doesn't add anything relevent to the article. But I don't want to start deleting every writer and zine title that doesn't wish to be here. You put your zine out into the world. You distro'ed it, you sent copies out for review. It's "public knowledge" and should be included here. IMO Alan Fall of Autumn 13:14, 4 April 2007 (EDT)

I agree. And in retrospect I think we should have had a discussion about the one a few weeks ago. After I read Sarah's comment I kinda thought, crap, it probably should be included because the zinester and zines she was involved in did have an impact on zine history and the zine community. The problem was her boyfriend had already edited all the text out, and if someone really wants a listing gone, they can keep vandalizing it like that since anyone can edit a listing. This new one was a fairly bogus listing anyway, that guy spent way too many edits putting up listings for his buddy and himself and their zine that no one has ever seen. I was planning on editing down the listing to just facts when he was done messing with it anyway and sorta felt relieved he deleted all the text and asked for the listing to be deleted. Maybe we should have a written policy and procedure for deletion requests? I'd be happy to work on one with you Alan. We definitely need to fill out some of the editing and info pages. dan10things 19:09, 4 April 2007 (EDT)
Regarding the deletion a few weeks ago: I feel as well that entry shouldn't have been deleted, particularly since the article in question was about a somewhat high profile zinester in the Riot Grrrl community at that time. This was someone who was doing interviews in the mainstream press, who contributed to a number of zines, and was very much a public figure. Inasmuch as that's true, I must disagree with Sarah. The information provided about this zinester was from only one perspective, a negative one, and I could see how it would alarm the person in question to have such information readily available on the Internet, especially since the events in question happened many years ago, and also because these events, even at the time they happened, were subject to interpretation. If i might propose a solution, it would be this: that the person who intervened for the zinester be asked to write an entry, or allow one of us to write an entry that includes facts such as what zines that were published, what distro were run, etc, without bringing up information that is subjective or open to interpretation. As much as we might not like to make what could be construed as a compromise in this situation, it would at least allow certain factual and historical information to be kept available.

In regards to the latest deletion, I was the one who 'rolled back' the info because, after all the work he did on the page, I assumed he must have made a mistake in deleting all the text. I guess I was wrong! InvisibleFriend 01:15, 5 April 2007 (EDT)

Recently this has happened with another page. The text for the article on Katya Dolorasa has all been deleted. However, I notice that within the article for the zine she edited, her name has been changed to Kate Amok. Perhaps she no longer wanted her real name to be known. In this case, should we delete the article on Katya (which now has no text anyway)?InvisibleFriend 15:38, 16 April 2007 (EDT)
I would say go ahea and delete it. We should come up with some kind of policy for this in the future though, and add it to the intro or About page. Alan Fall of Autumn 14:30, 17 April 2007 (EDT)

Deletions

I'm enquiring after the opinions of editors regarding deleting chapbooks. I do understand that the policy is to allow chapbooks to stay if they are by zinesters. However, several chapbooks do not have articles for their authors so, while they may be zinesters, no further information can be found about their zine-making activities. In such a case, it seems pointless to be including articles on their chapbooks on Zine Wiki, yes? On the other hand, someone like Donny Smith, for example, is represented on Zine Wiki by an article about his zine, Dwan, as well as the zinester entry about him included in Zine Wiki, so the article about his chapbook,Solanas, makes sense. So perhaps we could encourage the authors of articles on chapbooks to also write an article on the author/zinester as well, so that the purpose of Zine Wiki isn't lost. And if there isn't an article on the author, or a reference to an article about a zine they've created, we could delete the article on the chapbook until such time that someone does write one. What do you think?InvisibleFriend 20:51, 27 May 2007 (EDT)

Administator

Hi Alan and Dan, I'd like to nominate Eugenepunk for the position of administrator! Not only has he contributed a lot to the site, but he's been doing a lot of work that could be enhanced if he was an administrator. Just for instance, he's been so much help to me by resizing all the covers I've uploaded lately. Unfortunately, because he isn't an administrator, I have to go over everything he's resized to delete the older, larger images, cause he can't delete things. In any event, I'm sure he will continue to make valuable contributions but I hope you will consider this proposal.InvisibleFriend 22:06, 21 September 2007 (EDT)

Zine Essays

Eugenepunk got in touch with me about an idea he had and I promised him I'd pass it by everyone else here. He has found some interesting essays on zines that he thought would be great for Zine Wiki, provided he could get in touch with the writers for permission to reprint the articles here. The essays cover a range of different countries. He is also interested in adding more material from his brother's essay on zines which was the basis for the article on Early irish Zines. I personally really liked the article and thought it was a valuable contribution to Zine Wiki. Both Eugene and me would be interested in hearing what everyone thinks of these ideas. Congratulations!

Congratulations are in order as we now have 2000 articles! InvisibleFriend 05:59, 18 November 2007 (EST)

Wikification

Does anyone know of any technical reason why the article MoTHER (has words...) cannot be wikified in any other article, other than its own? Obviously it worked when it was entered into the list of zines by Belcoboy, and he was able to write an article for this zine, but since then all attempts to make it wikify in other articles have failed. Its not a big problem but it's all very mysterious and I can't help but wonder why this is the case! Thanks in advance for any assistance. InvisibleFriend 00:50, 28 January 2008 (EST)
