Started in August 2004, the zine is usually a mix of autobiographical comics and fictional (prose) short stories. Frequent topics include friendship, loneliness, death, unrequited love, music, and the California coast.
John Porcellino described Laterborn in Best Zine Ever: "This simple, sincere comic often focuses (so far) on true or seemingly-true stories about youth and adolescence. A lot of people do this kind of stuff, but Jason’s comics stand out for their simplicity and unaffected humanity... The artwork is simple, but emotive and strong, and the writing is from the heart."
Microcosm called Laterborn: "Some of the best written stories you've ever read. No, really."
