Grrrl Zines A-Go-Go is an all-women workshop group based in Southern California. Since 2002 they have been facilitating workshops in community venues and college campuses in their region. They focus on the empowerment of young women through the production of fanzines and self published works.

History

Formed in 2002, the instigator of the group was Elke Zobl, founder of the Grrrl Zine Network. As a visiting graduate student from Austria, Elke networked with local zinesters in San Diego. She hooked up with Margarat Nee, editor of Oya and Dogrrrl, Glue Magazine’s Claudia Lucero, Kim Schwenk, creator of Grrrl Noire and Cyclette, and Wives Tale’s editrix Britton Neubacher. Claudia and Britton left the main collective to pursue their careers in 2004. Ari Perezdiez of HousewifeXcore Distro joined the collective in August of 2004 as a guest speaker and formally joined in December 2004. In July of 2005 Elke Zobl left the collective to move back to Austria.

Projects

In 6 years Grrrl Zines A Go-Go has put on over 20 workshops, working with such organisations as the Hillcrest LGBT Centre, San Ysidro Public Libarary, SDSU, Cal Poly SLO, Cal state San Marcos, Hillcrest Book Faire, Portland Zine Sympoisum, Projet Mobilivre-Bookmobile Project, the S/he Collective, and San Diego Indymedia.

Grrrl Zines A Go-Go have facilitated non-zine making workshops such as Zines 101, History of Riot Grrrl, and Building Community Action Through Zines.
