Girl Swirl zine was started in the winter of 1998 after Taryn Hipp had moved from Pennsylvania after finishing high school to Denver, Colorado to attempt life alone.

There were twelve issues before a collection of pieces was put out in book format in 2005, titled "Girl Swirl The Book". Girl Swirl started as a women's health and information before it became the personal zine most remember it as.

Girl Swirl is included in the West Coast Zine Collection at San Diego State University.
