The first issue was released in September 2011. The zine comes out quarterly and is a non fiction zine dedicated to the culture and entertainment of horror and the occult, and is interested to new and well known heavy metal bands from around the world. It also covers new and classic horror movies featuring spotlights and essays on particular films.

The zine came about when editor Katie Dirge realized that there were some good horror and heavy metal magazines but there was nothing out there in the way of a zine that people could easily contribute to, and so Black Sunday was born.
