Auto-Free Times
Issue #13, Winter 1998
Cover by Andy Singer

Auto Free Times was the newsprint newsletter all about ending the devastation from cars in their city, San Francisco, and world wide. The follow-up magazine Cultural Change is the trademark of the Sustainable Energy Institute.

Issues include hard news stories on the downside of urban sprawl with its traffic, smog, land paving, bike and pedestrian hating, environmentally damaging ways. AFT covers what seems like every aspect of city traffic of any kind plus stories from activists for change, and some first rate cartoons to lighten up the message. Note their bicycle bumper sticker slogan that says, "Friends Don't Let Friends Drive"

The first issues were published as Paving Moratorium Update, printed as a newspaper format. Leading person behind this was Jan Lundberg, independent oil industry analyst and eco-activist. The titel was changed into Auto-Free Times in 1996. After issue #18 the magazine was again changed and issue #19 was published using the name Cultural Change.

Many of the cartoons and covers of Auto-Free Times were created by Andy Stinger [1].
